In our bed and breakfast here at Les Grands Prés, there are works of contemporary art on all the walls, including the guest rooms and of course in Jean's artist studio. Although
Parisian by birth, Jean has spent a lot of his time in the countryside.
It was a chance meeting with the artist Manuel Cargaleiro, in 1963,
which swayed him away from the worlds of poetry and theatre towards
that of painting. Hence his links with the painters of the Parisian
school and also of lyrical abstraction. For years, Jean has been
involved personally with the 'artist's studio Open Days' organised by artists
in their own studios in Paris and that is why he is keen to have
regular meetings in his Piégon artist studio.

Jean Chollet
has made use of a writing medium which is familiar to all of us. On
blank computer mailshot labels, he handwrites a succession of symbols,
a marathon of the imagination, using Indian ink and oil paint.
If the understanding of this vocabulary remains a mystery to us, it
nevertheless brings out a poetry of great intensity. The large sheets
are imprints like the re-appearance of those long successions of
symbols which state reds, blacks, whites.
In this long tradition of the exploration of symbols, Jean Chollet is
following the line of artists such as Henri Michaux and Jean Degottex.
